OS101
United Brotherhood of Scenesters (Victory Records)

By: Jeb Branin

As indicated by their moniker (which stands for OLD SCHOOL 101) this band has tapped into the past to find their way into the future. I had read a lot about OS101 and was very intrigued to hear this CD but to be honest I wasn't expecting a sound like this at all. OS101 are connected to the NYHC sXe scene so I had been expecting something more in line with the sXe cliche. I was wrong. As for sXe they seem to be influenced not by classic nyhc so much as INSTED but even more than that they bring to mind the old Orange County sound with plenty of early DESCENDENTS style brashness. Yep, that melodic and snotty sound that revitalized punk by utilizing classic pop in much the same way that THE RAMONES had. OS101 may be singing the praises of the East Coast and certainly bear the NYHC brand but their souls are on the other coast. Interestingly enough this gives them the old school sound but allows them to completely avoid getting trapped by comparisons to a nyhc scene that was over saturated and over emulated in the late eighties and early nineties. Whether you are an old punk or a new breed hard edge minion this band has your number... 101 that is.
