The Drown
The Drown (Matchbox Recordings, UK)

By: Jett Black

Debut recordings rarely get much better than this one. Eight wicked tracks open with an intense passion toward elements of electro-goth and industrial patterns that most fans in the scene may come to expect i.e. fluttering evil clown vocals, wailing and twisted like razor-wire around heavily ripped guitar chords, synth, sonic noise, and post-production loop-de-loops. The lyrical content pulls inspiration from poetic attributes characteristic of the scene: "we're tragedy's sweethearts..." and yet seems to also draw from personal anguish of love's labours lost. Favourites on this brief debut include "Vile Bodies" and "Between the Two of Us". Good fortune and more insightful mentoring may yield great production quality in the future of The Drown. (C+)
