Drowningman
Howtheylight (Revelation Records)

By: Jeb Branin

How about this as a new genre: post-post hardcore? DROWNINGMAN is a band that takes the lessons of all the post hardcore bands to heart but at the same time they retain an extremely intense edge that is hard to describe as anything less than the metallic sounding hardcore favored by the neo-emo bands or bands on labels like Revelation and Victory. So they are post hardcore returning to their roots or, as I've said, post-post hardcore. Yep, that works for me. But I guess the real question is does this MCD work for me? Well... I certainly am blown away by the intensity and the raw passion on the CD and I love the metallic overtones that intermingle with the hardcore riffing... so, yeah, it works for me. I think there are bands that do a better job at this kind of thing, like YOU AND I or even THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN (who takes this sound to the nth degree) but if you are really into the sound DROWNIGMAN are well worth checking out.
