Me & Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story) (Warp/Touch & Go)

By: Cam Lindsay

There's a reason why !!! are currently the hottest band on the block, and no, it's not because of their enigmatic name (pronounced however the hell you wanna say it). "Me & Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)" is easily the best single of 2003, so far, that's why. Nine minutes of the loosest punk funk anyone will dig up, it's a song even the too-cool-for-school hipsters will drag their asses on to the dance floor for. The fact that it's quite epic isn't a drag either, it's a blessing, for nine minutes isn't enough time. With the elasticized guitars and funkified slap bass (which they've somehow made cool again), the track bounces like a crazy ball right out of the machine. Nic Offer's vocals are poised and very cool, explaining just how the music takes over in his lyrics. With political leanings, it doesn't so much preach, but teach people how to get down. To better this would take a miracle, so don't even bother trying. A+
