Gino Washington
Love Bandit (Norton Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Detroit's prince of soul, Gino Washington had rock 'n' roll running through his blood, a smoky, rich soulful voice, and a love for Motown. The resulting edgy-soul, recorded during the 60's and 70's, was first experienced on CD in 1999 with the release of Out Of This World (Norton Records). Norton follows up Out Of This World with Love Bandit, a fifteen track collection of 7" singles and unreleased songs recorded between 1962-1971. Hear the larger-than-life soul master sing, making you sweat, as his backing band (Nathaniel Mayer, Pearl Jones, and The Tomangoes) play danceable rhythms, and engage in silky backing vocals, that will make you instantly fall in love. Also find other like minded soul vocalists from his backing band as they take lead and make you feel the same way Gino does when he turns a word into air you need to breath to stay alive. I'll give this an A.
