Bantam
Western Soul (Heavy Nose Records)

By: Alex Steininger

A hard-rocking, hard-knocking, fist-pounding explosion of bar rock, punk, and metal, the collision that is Bantam delivers a loud, furious self-titled full-length. Fronted by sensual and sleazy female vocals, the trio plays rock that is great to drinking and slamming around to. Power is where it excels. Where it starts to falter is on the melody front. Yes, the songs have melody and hooks, they're just not as strong. Nowhere near as dynamic as the music, making the band sound like a bash-it-out bar band that is trying to write radio-ready songs but just can't find the hooks to match the aggression of their music. Still, the music's volume speaks plenty for it and if you can overlook the lackluster hooks, this testosterone rock album may be your ticket. I'll give it a C.
