Kilowatthours / The Rum Diary
Split CD (Springman Records)

By: Alex Steininger

A split CD between Kilowatthours and The Rum Diary, released on both band's labels, Substandard and Springman, respectively, finds each band trading off, starting off with Kilowatthours. Coming together on track five, "(Ex)Change", the bands deliver a dark, brooding piano piece, while other tracks such as "King" and "Poolside" show what each band can do individually. "King", a Kilowatthour song, showcases the post-punk outfit delivering a rocking, yet clean and melodic number, while The Rum Diary's "Poolside" finds the band creating an ethereal indie-rock number for fans. Both bands sound at the top of their game here and, as much as I didn't want to like it, the switching off track after track does keep things fresh. I'll give it a B-.
