Tab Benoit
The Sea Saint Sessions (Telarc)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

Tab Benoit is one funky mother, the jump jive of his guitar is spiked by a Cajon zeal that drills into your head and gets the body moving like you're dancing through a snakes den. Songs like "Boat Launch Baby" leaves you with a down home bayou feel, the smell of cayenne and crayfish thick in your nose and the sweet kiss of whiskey on your lips. Benoit switches up to a deep swaying grove of soul on "Sufferin' Mind" where his voice is pulled to an emotional raggedness, revealing a man too familiar with the subject matter. The warm tones of Carl Dufrene are so lusciously thick, they feel like shag carpet that you can run your fingers through. It's on this swaying warmth of motion that Benoit and Monk Boudreaux build such soulful blues with "Monk's Blues" which could almost make a grown man cry if drinking wasn't easier. George Porter takes the bass on "Making the Bend" giving a more percussive feel to it and developing the tune into an attitude filled romp that doesn't back down. This is a great album with a mixed range of blues styles that covers the sway of emotions and thoughts giving this CD a fluent feel to it. Rating: A
