It Will Come To You...The Songs of John Hiatt (Vanguard Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

My bet is that you know and love a John Hiatt song whether you are aware of it or not. This collection will either remind you of this fact or make you a convert to the beauty that are his songs. Like so many tribute albums this CD is riddled with the who's who of musical acts but differentiates itself by the different musical styles it covers, testifying to the far reaching influences Hiatt has in the sphere of popular music. Buddy and Julie Miller offer a ruckus western edge to their version of "Paper Thin", followed by the angelic voice of Patty Griffin with a folk infused "Take It Down." The Blues has a prominent presence with artist like Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, B.B.King, and Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise all contributing tracks. Bradley's "It'll Come to You" makes your soul thirst for whiskey, it's such pure Blues, and Buddy Guy brings a blessed touch of Gospel to his take on "Feels Like Rain." Country music has a good share of input on this album with Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Rosanne Cash all providing awesome renditions of Hiatt's music. There's not a bad song on this album, and truly highlights the great work of a master of his craft. Rating: A+
