Kaz Murphy
Devil in the Barn (Barn Wall Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Kaz Murphy's latest, Devil in the Barn, displays his songwriting prowess, as he takes you through eleven cuts of roots-y, home spun songs from the heart. His voice is that of a man telling a story that he's told many times before, going through the words as if he could recite them in his sleep. But, it is the music, the rambling, rustic sounds of Murphy's version of folk, steeped in a little bit of country, that keep the stories interesting even after Murphy has told them time and time again. The rustle of the guitar and the various accompaniment from light percussion to lap and/or pedal steel, harmonica, banjo, and organ, or many more, depending on the track, breath new life into the stories. And keep them interesting, allowing you to hear the record over and over again, and feel as if you're hearing the stories for the first time. I'll give it a B-.
