Apple O' (Kill Rock Stars/5 Rue Christine)

Like finding a diamond in the rough, finding Apple O' by Deerhoof is a very rewarding experience. Featuring members of The Curtains, Natural Dreamers and Xiu Xiu, this four-piece ensemble designs music with an eclectic arrangement of sharp chords, momentary lapses, and erratic boy/girl vocals. At first, it all seems a little difficult and arty, but the more you listen to it, the more it becomes a wild pop record and tremendously enjoyable. Beginning with the motivational "Dummy Discards A Heart", the album's shiniest pop moment, Apple O' assumes a playful direction immediately. There are periodic shifts between energetic moments and downtime, but the slower parts such as the delightfully inventive "The Forbidden Fruits", one of the few tracks that takes on a theme devoted to the happenings in The Garden of Eden, make for some inspiring listening. In fact, with all of its beauty, disarray and imagination, all of Deerhoof's sixth album is inspiring to hear. A
