Near Dark (Anchor Bay Entertainment)
By: Randy Harward

Before vampires made the switch from slick, cultured bloodsuckers to feral beasts that not only exsanguinate, but manually dismember, victims, two films painted a more human...and dare I assume, accurate...picture. The best known would be The Lost Boys, but Near Dark is easily the best. ND's gang of misfit vampires is, on the whole, more like the mortals they once were, and therefore more interesting. Of course, this makes them a bit scarier as well. This likely lead to Near Dark's respectable cult following and the eventual demand for deluxe DVD release. Presented in a sleek two-disc set, the film is bigged up with extras (all the extraneous interviews, commentary, galleries, storyboards, trailers, blah, blah, BLAH) but the sweet transfer and refreshed availability in a durable format is all that matters.
