The Sid Hillman Quartet
Volume Two (Innerstate Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Lyrically-focused Americana that creeps up on you as Sid Hillman's voice travels roads he's been down before, all to re-tell the stories of things he's seen and experienced, the music slowly (but not always lightly) flows in the background, shining the spotlight on Hillman. The Sid Hillman Quartet is the kind of band you'd go see at a neighborhood bar, see for the first time, and be completely blown away, always returning to down a few beers with friends while enjoying the life of Hillman through his songs. Far from alt-country, grounded in folk, and inspired by country, The Sid Hillman Quartet is best described as well-written songs from a well-worn band that knows the score. I'll give it an A.
