Keith Welsh
American (Box Car Records)

By: Alex Steininger

With little more than an acoustic guitar or piano and sparse instrumentation, Keith Welsh is able to create a dark, moody record with the occasional jangly upbeat pop number. American touches upon both optimism and pessimism while reeling you in with fragile melodies that feel as if they're close to breaking down or being torn apart. Somehow they hold up, keeping your attention, and drawing you right back to Welsh's voice. A voice that is dark and hesitant, playing the part of the man who has it all under control, but wants to break out and let you know he too needs a shoulder to cry on at times. Bold, rich, and full of feelings, Welsh delivers a singer-songwriter album any singer-songwriter would be proud of. I'll give it an A.
