The New Pornographers
Electric Version (Matador Records)

By: Alex Steininger

With their second full-length (first for Matador), Electric Version, Canadian power-pop outfit The New Pornographers deliver the anticipated follow-up to their debut, Mass Romantic. Equally engaging and energetic as their debut, Electric Version once again finds the band creating chunky, sing-along songs that get stuck in your head for days and days while the keyboard parts dance around in your mind, and the rhythm section makes you want to dance. However, much like on Mass Romantic, it is the pairing of front man Carl Newman with Neko Case, Case's backing vocals nicely complimenting Newman's leads, that makes The New Pornographers such a treat. And there is no shortage of that on Electric Version, nor is there any shortages of hooks, juicy beats, memorable lyrics, and power. This is power-pop's finest moment; I'll give it an A-.
