Mark Mathis
Songs I Learned in College (Freshwater Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Mark Mathis' Songs I Learned in College is loose and unfulfilling at times, the arrangements not fully worked out, and the songs feeling like demos. However, they more than make up for it with the moody, even depressed lyrical content and somber pop, touched up with a folk touch. This album may not have all the goods, but Mathis' pain is your pain when you're listening to this record; he does a good job of engaging the listener. I'll give it a C+.
