Yo La Tengo
Nuclear War (Matador Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Four different versions of Sun Ra's "Nuclear War" comprise Yo La Tengo's Nuclear War EP. From the jazz-inspired to the hippie-powered percussion, through the psychedelic, the four songs are different enough to justify four tracks on one CD (though others may not be able to pull it off like Yo La Tengo). But, "Nuclear War" is the focal point of every version; therefore it is hard to stray too far from the origin. Which makes the CD wear on your nerves a bit after a while. It's good for a few listens, but after that you quickly grow tired of the song. I'll give it a C+.
