James Mathus & His Knockdown Society
National Antiseptic (Mammoth Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Squirrel Nut Zipper's James Mathus, along with His Knockdown Society (featuring members of North Mississippi Allstars), delivers a gritty, roots-driven blues record true to the Delta. From the distance of "Take A Ride With Me" to the muddy rock-driven "Drinkin' Antiseptic," and through the instrumental slow jam shuffle of "Issaqueena St. Shuffle." Mathus and company concocts one heck of a blues album, one that is gutsy and gritty, tingling with blues fever, and speaks to your soul. I'll give it an A.
