Even Johansen
quiet&still (Amazing Grease)

By: Alex Steininger

Far beyond a singer-songwriter album, Even Johansen's quiet&still is roots-y and hook-laden, underneath a layer of darkness and reclusive-ness. The subtle songs push their way to the front of the crowd, before disappearing and re-appearing again seconds later somewhere else. The album is slow moving, but just when you think it is getting tired on you, it grabs the rug out from under you and watches you fall flat on your ass. Then it soothes you with delicate melodies and dark, hypnotic sounds, before repeating the process. Johansen's songwriting is complicated and simple all the same, though his mysterious, dark voice adds a bit of passion and intrigue to everything. I'll give it an A-.
