Carrie Akre
Home (Good Ink Records)

By: Kim Berhorst

What a pleasure - the former voice of Hammerbox and Goodness proves that Home is where her heart is. Akre's new solo album does much to fill a void in the NW's indie vein. What I've been missing is a feminine voice that asserts without apologies, seduces with sensuality, and bares her soul, not her sex. Home is imbibed with such a sense, beautifully. I don't usually go for the mellow and soulful albums, but this one grabbed me - and held on - with cello-rich vocals and mature lyrics. Fans of Akre's former bands will appreciate guest appearances by Harris Thurmond (Hammerbox), and Garth Reeves (Goodness). Not to be overlooked are Reggie Watts (Maktub), Jeff Wood and Phil Hurley (Gigolo Aunts), and Eric Akre. Oh, Home contains some splendid rock tracks, too.
