Motorbaby
Motorbaby (Rawkus/Mercury Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Motorbaby is a pop-rock band with a drive. Fronted by Sharon Middendorf, vocals and guitar, this three piece outfit pushes pop-rock past its usual boundaries with motor-like energy that delivers twelve tracks on their major label debut.

Right from the get go this album pushes the intensity level high. Even when the music gets mellow and very pop oriented, they still keep enough kick in the music to remind you that without energy and a drive, everything is lifeless. The drums and the bass jump between soft emphasis for the vocals and guitar to a strong force when the guitar turns up the noise. There is no doubt what leads the band though, it is clearly the vocals. The guitar, bass, and drums are just instruments used to strengthen Sharon's lyrics. When words are sang, they are the force behind the song.

What's nice about this album is its consistency. There isn't a few really great pop songs and then a few more sub-par ones. Each one is different, yet each one maintains the same level of spirit whether it be a soft pop song or a more powerful pop number. I'll give this a B+.
