Five By Nine
Recognize (One Foot Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Fans of action packed, fast punk rock get ready! Five by Nine is here with "Recognize," a fifteen track CD with over forty six minutes of music sure to put a smile on your face.

The CD starts out with "Night Life." It starts out with some nice bass riffs, and then takes a soft musical "pause" before kicking everything into full gear. The beat is fast, melodic, and lead by strong vocals. The band plays well off each other, and everything is nicely compiled for your listening pleasures. "Cross the Line" keeps everything lively. The backing vocals, which sometimes can bring a song to it's knees, add a different dimension to the song. The chorus hits you hard. It's not very infectious, but with the backing vocals the chorus carries its own wait and pulls the song up. The song takes a momentary breather as the vocals sing and talk over a lighter sound in the back. But then the band thrusts back into everything it loves, and you start back up your feet and jump, jump, jump! "Useless," "Know Yourself," "Reconstruction," and "Clone" bring you more speed, roughness, power, and everything you crave and need. The bass drives itself into an intense fury, while the guitars are thick and throw themselves around with ease. The drums act as binding, and glue itself to the music building a stronger, thicker, and more intense sound. Everything is blended and crafted carefully, and your immediate reaction is a smile.

Not the most original sound on planet Earth, but these guys sure can rock. And have fun doing it. And a good thing for the listener is that the music rubs off on you. You'll find yourself listening to this a few times, enjoying every moment. I'll give this CD a B.
