Facing New York
Facing New York (Five One Inc.)

By: Mike SOS

The five member outfit known as Facing New York?s jazzy discordance takes a while to grasp at first, but after the soothing keyboards, soaring melodies, and slacker meets hipster vocals kick into high gear, you can easily see the musical prowess oozing from this band. With a scope of influences ranging from Genesis to Fugazi, songs like "Fly on the Wall" dazzle the listener with the airs of both Steely Dan and The Mars Volta, while "Full Turn" finds the band pushing the prog rock aesthetic into a punk rock package. Startling and subversive, this self-titled endeavor has got that universal appeal feel, despite the band frequently going off in strange yet wondrous tangents. If you?re a sucker for melody and love a band that jams out, this eponymous debut with all of its peaks and valleys will undoubtedly sustain your interest for a long time.
