The Attractive Female Twins
Rock Appreciation 101 (self-released)

By: Alex Steininger

If Matt Sharp?s entrance into the singer-songwriter world, with the debut of his gorgeous (yes, I know I put it out, but oh well, it?s still gorgeous), EP, Puckett?s Vs. The Country Boy and the self-titled full-length, has left a whole in your heart, and a longing for some Rentals-esque new-wave to rock out to, then you might just dig The Attractive Female Twins.

Delivering Weezer-meets-Rentals-style new-wave/power-pop on their debut EP, Rock Appreciation 101 (obviously taught by Sharp and Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo), those who are bummed that Sharp put The Rentals on hiatus will find delight in this little nugget.

From the danceable keyboard parts of Cass Speerschneider, through the vocal harmonies of James and Nell Speerschneider, this band has it dialed in. "Sing In Stereo" could have been an early Rentals demo, while "Letters We Write (vacation)" sounds like Weezer circa the Blue Album.

We know where their influences are. It?s blatantly obvious. And though they break no new musical ground, and prefer instead to just take from their two favorite bands, they do a darn good job of paying homage. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And Rock Appreciation 101 is quite flattering to Sharp and Cuomo in that regard. I?ll give it a B-.
