Broadcast
Pendulum (Warp)

By: Cam Lindsay

The year 2000's The Noise Made By People was arguably one of the, if not the best album of that year, which has made this three-year wait for new material from Broadcast rather painful. Back with a delicious new EP, Broadcast haven't changed much about their songwriting recipes buts that's exactly what people want. Pendulum sees the band up to their old tricks, making spectacularly complex and riveting art-pop. The title track is one of their more affable songs to date, led by a driving motorik beat and Trish Keenan using that sweet yet very detached voice to hypnotise listeners. The remainder of the EP sheds some light on new ground the band has explored. Though not drastically different, songs like "One Hour Empire" uncovers the band's interest in free jazz, while "Still Feels Like Tears" gets more emotional than Broadcast has ever been on record. The only disappointment with the taster for the upcoming album is "Minus Two", partly because it feels half-assed and lifeless, like filler to finish off the EP with. A-
