13 (MeteorCity Records)

By: Jeb Branin

There is an entire underground universe dedicated to musicians who live and breathe music inspired by the mighty BLACK SABBATH. Sure the doom scene has lots of other influences and more recently has even demonstrated that it has some originality and innovation, but the fact of the matter is it all comes back, sooner or later, to BLACK SABBATH. That said there are few, if any, bands plying the doom trade today who can match Sabbath-esque influences riff for riff with SOLACE. I've had the privilege of being able to follow this band since their demo days and I gotta tell you there just aren't very many bands of their caliber out there. Clean yet bombastic vocals, teeth rattling guitars that are full of tar but not plodding, and rhythms that crack the earth's crust are the norm not the exception whenever SOLACE lays it down. "13" is an album that shows SOLACE continues to evolve and mature without losing one ounce of their original appeal. You might as well submit now because twenty years from now you'll be paying good money to see SOLACE tribute bands.
