Agalloch
The Mantle (The End Records)

By: Jeb Branin

What makes the latest effort by AGALLOCH so noteworthy is how effectively and maturely it deals with the complexity of emotions it is trying to tap into. Often those emotions are contradictory and at odds with each other, a fact that only makes the task of broaching them musically that much more difficult. Somberness, introspection, foreboding, evil, rapture, desperation, celebration, fear, triumph, and more all rolled into one. It's as if the music is trying to take the listener through a lifetime of catharsis in the course of only a single hour. To do this "The Mantle" uses a combination of musical elements including acoustic, folk, death, gothic, and minimalist electronica.
