Asylum Street Spankers
My Favorite Record (Bloodshot Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Giving roots music a kick in the ass, the Asylum Street Spankers bring new meaning to the term "tongue-in-cheek", their slightly perverted, completely hilarious jaunts through every aspect of Americana a refreshing, much needed breath in the life of music. While other artists are going on and on about how hard their life is. How much they hate the world. And how frustrated they are (though there can, and is, a time and a place for this), Austin, Texas' Asylum Street Spankers seem more concerned with singing about losing their virginity, getting people into bed with them, playing the music they love with a twist. Whether its Vaudeville ("Insane Asylum"), the blues ("Wammo's Blues"), 30's swing ("Monkey Rag"), jazz ("Breathin'"), or country ("Mountain Town"), they do it with conviction. Playing with their hearts and souls and having fun to boot. They remind me that you should always make room for fun in your life and don't take things too seriously. Life is just too short. I'll give this an A-.
