They Threw Us All In A Trench and Stuck A Monument On Top (Mute)

By: Cam Lindsay

Welcome to the most exciting album...ever. Originally released on Gern Blandsten late last year, Liars' debut album is so good that it has been released again, to make sure that everyone hears it. They Threw Us All In A Trench and Stuck A Monument On Top is a record filled with some much spazzed out punk energy and obscure funk that it's not only the craziest thing you'll hear all year, but also one of the best. The obscure song titles are only the start, ranging from the brilliant "Mr your on fire Mr" to the wacky "Grown men don't fall in the river, just like that". They pay homage to classic post-punk/disco heroes ESG, with the sweet "Tumbling walls buried me in the debris with ESG". Of the nine tracks on the record, only one is not a short, action-packed ball of adrenaline. That track is "This dust makes that mud", a 30-minute epic piece of experimental and poetic prog-punk that is just as compelling and fun to hear as the prior 8 anthems of noise. They Threw Us All In A Trench and Stuck A Monument On Top is everything anyone could want in a band right now. They have the smarts, the creativity, the tunes, and if that's not good enough, they have a six-foot-six giant from Australia named Angus as their lead singer. A+
