Entwine
Gone (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

One word not often associated with heavy metal is "beautiful" but for the music on this album it is a fitting description. ENTWINE are coming at their goth inspired tuneage from the same direction as LACUNA COIL and THE GATHERING. Considering how much I like those two bands you would expect me to flip for this, but I don't. It is definitely a satisfactory album and I'll listen to it even after I've written the review (something true of only a fraction of the music I get) but there is a key ingredient missing in the music of ENTWINE and it is something that there is just no way to compensate for. That something is sex appeal. Vocalist Mika Taurainen is beyond talented but his voice can't contain the seductive quality of either Christina of LACUNA COIL or Anneke of THE GATHERING, especially Anneke! Y'see what makes this particular genre of metal interesting is the romance (albeit dark romance) it contains. A male voice cannot achieve that level of romance for me. For female or gay listeners Mika's voice will probably be more than enough to do the trick but from my perspective it just won't work. I still enjoy the album just not the same way I do THE GATHERING.
