TransChamps
Double Exposure (Thrill Jockey)

By: Alex Steininger

A super group in their own right, TransChamps is Trans Am and The Fucking Champs working together, writing the perfect song, and having a blast doing it. Double Exposure, the fruit of their labor, is a five-song EP of stellar songs, ranging in style from majestic pop to blistering rock nuggets.

"Give It To You," the opening track, is a throwback to 70's arena rock and 80's pop, an explosive combination that will have you melting with joy. "The Big Machine" is a raved-up psychedelic dance track. "First Comes Sunday Morning" is a poignant, beautifully crafted pop instrumental. "Then Comes Saturday Night" is all 70's cock rock and guitar solos. And album closer "Somebody Like You" is a haunting synth-driven pop-goth-rocker.

Truly an exhilarating, breathtaking collaboration, to say the least, TransChamps' Double Exposure is a record that gives validation to the term "side project". Though this may not be either The Fucking Champs or Trans Am's bread and butter of musical output, its good to hear them get together and have fun so we too can have fun. I'll give it an A-.15
