J Mascis + The Fog
More Light (Ultimatum Music)

 I never got Dinosaur Jr. and I never got J Mascis' other solo work. However, More Light, backed by The Fog, is a classic guitar-rock album with plenty going on for it. It's a beefed up, muscular rock album that is shadowed by its pop sensibilities, but never lets its guard down, always allowing the rock to scream and blaze the trail. J Mascis' voice is worn-in and tired sounding, giving the rock another dimension. A sense of already-been-here-but-lovin'-it, if you will. Though, no matter how tired his voice sounds, the music is so energetic and lively, the songs will never admit defeat. Anything, but, actually. They'll command and control you from start to finish. I'll give this album an A.
