Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop (Educational Recordings)

By: Alex Steininger

Despite its bleak title, Cutthroat Standards & Black Pop is a blissful pop album that delivers lush melodies, warm rhythms, and countless hooks. The lyrics, on the other hand, sometimes stray away from the gentle, loving nature of the album, holding true to the title. For the most part, even when a song is spiked with hate like, "The Hate Song", the music is still inviting, easy to cuddle up and enjoy on a rainy day or next to a warm fire. Harmonious pop that keeps you smiling even when you're hearing "If you put me to the test/ I might could kick you in the chest". Isn't that in itself amazing? I'll give it an A.
