Skinlab
Disembody: The New Flesh (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

Every time I listen to SKINLAB I can't help but compare them to SKIN CHAMBER. Admittedly much of that is probably due to the near plagiarism of monikers but a lot of it has to do with the overwhelming power of the music. Take SKIN CHAMBER and surgically remove (with a rusty scalpel, of course) the death/doom metal overtones and in their place graft plenty of new breed Victory style hardcore and you've got SKINLAB. The two bands share an affinity for industrial flavorings, spooky atmospheric undercurrents, and incredibly dark and complex music. Like S.C., SKINLAB are on the very cutting edge of their genre. They have already gone where many will spend years trying to get to. This new slab from SKINLAB will score big with fans of many different genres of extreme music be it metal or hardcore. Sometimes the band gets adventurous enough with their sound that things get a bit tedious (bordering on pretentious) but those downfalls are totally overshadowed by pure hostility and rage of the rest of the album.
