Katatonia
Discouraged Ones (Century Media -- 1453-A 14th St. #324/Santa Monica, CA 90404)

By: Jeb Branin

I am decidedly NOT a fan of this band and was expecting not a damn thing from this disc. I couldn't help but get more than I expected, now could I? KATATONIA have definitely changed since they released "Dance of December Souls" and "Brave Murder Day". The band have dropped their black metal sound almost entirely and have opted to jump on the gothic/doom bandwagon. Oddly enough they are a better goth band than a black one. They still have some severe limitations with their frustratingly repetitive rhythm guitar sound but the clean vocals, moody atmosphere and subdued sound are all fairly enjoyable and even sound sincere.
