SHOW REVIEW: Third Eye Blind/Super Deluxe
LaLuna, November 29, 1997-Portland, Oregon

By: Sonya

...Didn't moshing go out in - like - '92???? I take it from frontman Stephan Jenkins' comment that Third Eye Blind was a bit surprised by the enthusiastic audience reaction they got from the Portland crowd! I must admit - I was a bit surprised at the mob scene at La Luna, too! It made me think of a comment made by Soul Coughing at their Washington Park show... "dance with your HIPS, NOT your elbows"!!!

Anyway, Super Deluxe was the warm up band and I REALLY enjoyed their set. They were very funny and personable and their sense of humor really shows through in songs like "All I Wanted Was A Skateboard".

When Third Eye Blind took the stage, they were intense and full of energy. Stephan looked like a man possessed, and the basist Arion was sporting the most awesome pigtails! Of course, they did all the tunes that we wanted to hear... "Graduate", "How's It Gonna' Be", "London"... and the true crowd pleaser "Semi Charmed Life". Yes, that "nasty little tune about f***ing and drugs" (to quote Stephan) - I had to laugh at THAT comment!

I seem to always have a blast when I see a show at LaLuna, and this was no exception. I must say the highlight of the ENTIRE night for me was when Braden from Super Deluxe showed up in the bar after their set. I was able to get my CD signed and a rather nice Super Deluxe hug ;) Perhaps that is why I was so impressed with them that night - good PR! - Oh, and I do like my new Super Deluxe CD "Via Satellite", especially the song "Your Pleasure's Mine".

Everyone seemed to have a good time - it didn't seem to matter if moshing was "OUT" or not - I think it's here to stay when you have as much energy as Third Eye Blind seemed to have - and everyone needs some form of release! As for me, I think I'll hang out in the balcony where it's safe!
