INTERVIEW: Lupus, guitar and vocals for Blood Hound Gang
By: Aaron Schiff
Question: Who came up with "Fire, Water, Burn"?
Lupus: Well, the chorus itself is from a song by Rockmaster Scott, but all the lyrics and music for it were written by Jimmy Pop, he writes all the lyrics and most of the music. Whatever music he doesn't write, I do.
Question: Is Nerf Herder a fun band to tour with?
Lupus: One of the best. The guys put out one of my favorite albums and I have some demos and stuff that are completely amazing. They are very fun to hang out with and one of those bands I never get tired of watching every night. I wish we could tour with them all the time. In fact the first tour line up was one of my favorites.... Them, 22 Jacks, and Isabelle's gift. Currently we're touring with Puzzle Gut (from LA) and they are pretty rad too.
Question: How long have you known everyone else in the band?
Lupus: I've known Jimmy almost 9 years. Everyone else around 2-3 years.
Question: Whom are you going to be touring with next?
Lupus: Our next tour will be in Europe and it's mostly festivals, so we'll be playing with everyone you can think of.... One festival alone has Bush, No Doubt, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Tonic, Blur, Oasis, Foo Fighters, Veruca Salt and Stuck Mojo (plus a ton more). Question: Do you have any side bands?
Lupus: I'm working on a side band called 47 Chromosomes. Its basically me and a bunch of other bands that I like and have become friends with. It's still being written and I have little time to write on the road, but I hope to do at least a seven inch by early next year. Some of the guys that said they would do it include, Scott from Rev. Horton Heat, Steve and Parry from Nerf Herder, and Clint and Lajohn from Sevendust.
Question: Who writes the songs?
Lupus: Jimmy Pop writes all the lyrics and about 70% of the music, I wrote the Rest of the music.
Question: When is your next album coming out?
Lupus: Sometime next year, I think we're going to record sometime in Jan 98.
Question: Where did you get the name, "Blood Hound Gang," and who came up with it?
Lupus: It comes from an old PBS show called 3-2-1 Contact. In it there was a segment called "Bloodhound Gang" where kids solved crimes with math puzzles. It sounds tough, but it's really just a bunch of nerds. Jimmy came up with it with the original members when the band first formed about 5 years ago.
Question: When and where was your first gig?
Lupus: My first show ever wasn't with the Bloodhound Gang but my first ever band called Faust at the high school talent show. My first BHG show was at the G-Spot (a kid's garage at Kutztwon University)...it was about 4 years ago. I remember there was snow on the ground and it was freezing but it was about 100 degrees inside.
Question: Any words of wisdom?
Lupus: None whatsoever.
